On Sunday, October 26th the national holiday was ‘celebrated’ with the annual military parade at Vienna’s Heldenplatz (en: heroes’ square). However, there were still a couple of direct actions opposing the demonstration of military force. In the morning, Deserteurs- und Flüchtlingsberatung – a NGO which was founded in the course of the Yugoslavian wars of the 90s, offering support for deserters and refugees – was calling for a commemoration for the victims of the military justice of the Nazi-regime more than 60 years ago. Later the day, several groups such as GJA-Vienna or ARGE Wehrdienstverweigerung had set up info-stands and initiated guerilla-style street theatre, opposing the military parade. The theatre-group theatercombinat and community-radio-station Orange 94.0 collaborated on a performace of Elfriede Jelinek’s anti-war-play Bambiland (full text in English translation): people were called to infiltrate the military-enthusiastic crowd with portable radios, Orange 94.0 was broadcasting the hole play throughout the afternoon.

As a result of Austria’s right-wing parties winning the general elections in September, right extremism is currently seizing the streets as well. In the night from October 25th to 26th, an anniversary party by Rosa Antifa Wien (en: pink anti-fascists Vienna) was attacked by a group of Neo-Nazis. Around 2am, about ten men – dressed in uniforms with ski-masks – entered the venue W23 and injured two people. The unusually high presence of police throughout the night suggests that the police might have had some informations on the planned assault beforehand. By the time the Nazi-rowdies had arrived, however, the police had already left the scene – without informing anyone about the potential threat.

On Tuesday, October 29 Martin Graf was elected the 3rd locum-president of the Austrian parlament with the votes of the far-right parties FPÖ and BZÖ, the conservatives and some social democratic deputies. Graf is member of Olympia, a fraternity which is considered right-extremist by the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance. Just one day later, the annual Couleurbummel will take place in from of the University of Vienna. This demonstration of several right-extreme fraternities will be accompanied by an anti-fascist protests.

Last not least there are some good news the report as well: the trial against four policemen, who had tortured Bakary J. during a failed deportation in 2006, has to be repeated after the Higher Administrative Court had criticised the sentences as too mild. With penalties of between six and eight months on probation, the convicted policemen were back in service only four months after the trial.

Dubsquare’s second release features four subbass-driven Dubstep/Elektro-hybrids by Ca.tter. Fuelled by experimental verve, her tunes playfully embrace the filthy, wonky and grimey side of Dubstep, without ever loosing sight of the dancefloor – some ultra-dark machine-tales told in an 8-bit-language.

With a background in experimental/electronics and techno, she first attracted attention as one third of 550 Rondy and their 2001 release on Vienna’s legendary Cheap Records, with two subsequent EPs on temp~records. In 2004 – two years after she had attended the Red Bull Music Academy in São Paulo – Catarina Pratter’s solo-debut on Berlin-based label SueMi and contributions to Gudrun Gut’s Monika Enterprise and Electric Indigo’s Female Pressure Compilations followed.

Infected by Dubstep, around 2006 Catarina Pratter’s tracks became darker with a slight industrial edge. While her roots are undeniably still present, trickier rhythms and arrangements put the funk back in a futuristic mixture of Detroit electro and dubstep. A skanking hi-hat reminiscent of her past now rather blends in than to dominate her refreshing and fascinating tracks full of synthetic surprises and the occasional unforeseeable twist.

In 2005 a group of students at the University of Vienna had the idea to establish an independent, non-commercial venue at an abandoned former bookshop at the university-campus. As the university-administration refused to even talk about the issue – presumably not least to a highly profitable campus – Gruppe Freiraum (en: Group Free-space) started to underline their demands with a couple of efforts to non-violently squat empty shops on the campus. Since the university continued to refuse negotiations and asked police to have the activists removed every time, the squatters usually left peacefully. Only in one rather spectacular case, a couple of activists managed to construct a tree-house in front of the squat, from which they refused to withdraw for several days. The police was left pretty puzzled after deciding that simply copping down the trees was no reasonable option in this case.

As a consequence of this situation, the activists expanded their activities beyond the university-campus. Leaving their claim for an non-commercial centre intact, they continued to peacefully squat several abandoned premises such as the Stadt des Kindes (en: City for Children), a historic project which was demolished soon thereafter. Their idea for such a venue includes a open space for meetings and projects, a space reserved for women, a no-money-shop, an open kitchen, a critical (non-)university as well as a free nursery.

In the meantime, several other initiatives for alternative space had sprung up across the city: i:da (en: idea direct action) and Einbaumöbel could establish venues for concerts, cinema and other events; Rosa Antifa Wien (en: Pink Antifa Vienna) set up a project-space in the city-centre; several squat-efforts by a group of punks lead to the installation of a Pankahyttn (en: Punks’ Lodge), partly looked after by the city; at the eastern outskirts of the city, activists could establish a “Wagenplatz”, a kind of self-organised, non-commercial caravan-site; a Kostnixladen (en: No-Money-Shop) was opened at Vekks; Tüwi, an alternative, self-organised venue at the University of Agriculture successfully struggled for its independence; and last not least EKH, a squat which had been existing for more than 15 years, could be saved after the small communist had sold the squatted building to a Neo-Nazi-investor.

Whereas the intensified networking activities and mutual support among the initiatives was certainly the key of success for these projects to prevail, the probably most ambitious and comprehensive project could not be put into practice yet. Struggling for more that three years now, however, it doesn’t seem that Gruppe Freiraum is likely to give on their vision any soon. The next attempt will take place on Friday, October 17th 2008 at 8pm, more detailed information is available at www.freiraum.at.tt – expect “luxury for a night” such as bands, food and drinks alongside a bit of Dubstep as well ;)
